Many donors to Benefis Health System Foundation choose to give “where the need is the greatest.” Unrestricted gifts from these valuable donors show the depth of their confidence in us, allowing us to do wonderful things to advance our mission. Benefis Foundation’s Board of Directors determines where donations to our Greatest Need fund are best directed to help the most people.
Here are some of the ways donors who give to the Greatest Need have made a difference:
da Vinci Surgical System
Funding was provided to Benefis to assist in the purchase of the da Vinci Surgical System. The amazing robotic program allows surgeons to perform procedures, such as prostate and gynecological surgeries, with smaller incisions and less trauma to the patient's body. This not only shortens the recovery time for the patients but also results in lower costs because of the shorter hospital stay. In some cases, the patient can go home the next day.
Eagle Mount Scholarships
Funding was provided to Eagle Mount for full scholarships for two families to attend a Movement Based Learning Workshop. The workshop teaches a technique that helps families work with their children who have special needs.
Benefis Health System Foundation provides funding each year for Think First presentations throughout Northcentral Montana. Think First is a national prevention program aimed at educating children to recognize risk-taking behavior and prevent injury.
Bone Marrow Donor Screenings
Benefis Health System Foundation gave a grant to the Inland Northwest Blood Center to provide free bone marrow screenings at Benefis Sletten Cancer Institute in Great Falls and Hi-Line Sletten Cancer Center in Havre. The grant made it possible for nearly 50 people to get cheek swabs so their tissue typing can be added to the "Be The Match" registry. This was an extraordinary gift to hundreds of patients across the nation who are looking for their life-saving miracle match.
Safety First Rally
Benefis Health System Foundation uses donated funds to buy protective helmets to give away to children in our region. Bicycle, skateboarding and equestrian helmets are given to children at the annual Safety First Rally have been given to the Great Falls Park and Recreation Department, Longfellow School, Cascade 4-H Clubs and the White Sulphur Springs and Belt communities.
NeighborWorks Great Falls
Benefis Health System Foundation answered calls for help from NeighborWorks Great Falls in 2007, 2009 and 2010 when the organization identified needs for wheelchair ramps for people who didn't qualify for the Medicaid-waiver program and could not afford to buy one. The Foundation has provided a total of $40,000 to NeighborWorks to help build reusable wheelchair ramps, in turn allowing some of our wheelchair-bound residents the luxury of remaining in their homes.
Great Falls Senior Center
Benefis Health System Foundation gave $1,000 to the Great Falls Senior Center to help support the Senior Exercise Program, which is offered four days a week to anyone 50 or older. The Monday and Wednesday classes are for improving balance and preventing falls, while the Tuesday and Thursday classes provide more of an aerobic workout.
Benefis Health System Foundation is happy to help the people of Northcentral Montana with these and other projects through our Greatest Need fund. Through your support, the Benefis Foundation Board of Directors will be able to continue directing money to help with the most pressing healthcare needs of the moment.
