Application Deadline June 1 for Fall/Spring Semesters
Benefis Health System Foundation for many years has had a Healthcare Scholarship Program designed to assist with Benefis Health System’s recruitment and retention efforts to ensure compassionate, quality care is extended to all patients.
In 1998, Benefis Foundation added a Named Scholarship Endowment program, which has been funded by many generous donors for years. Benefis Foundation has about a dozen named scholarships and scholarship endowments, and we are hoping to grow that number so we can support even more students in the years to come. The Foundation is grateful to Benefis and to the wonderful people who support the Healthcare Scholarship Program — those who give to the Healthcare Scholarship fund as well as those who create and support named scholarships and named scholarship endowments.
The Healthcare Scholarship Program offers a Medical Education Scholarship to eligible students who wish to obtain and/or advance their healthcare education or certification and are willing to sign a Work Commitment Agreement with Benefis. This scholarship is supported by Benefis and the many kind donors who give to the program through the Benefis Foundation.

Darlene G. Skees Memorial Nursing Scholarship Endowment
Darlene Glantz Skees, a local business woman and author, was known far and wide for her wonderful series of cookbooks. Sadly, she developed an illness, which she suffered with for a long time before she passed away. But she was very grateful to those who cared for her, and it was her wish to help caregivers further their education. So her husband, John, created this scholarship – Benefis Health System Foundation’s first named scholarship endowment – in 1998 to provide scholarships to assist LPNs and other care providers in becoming registered nurses or to permit a registered nurse to continue studies in the pursuit of advanced nursing education.

Smith/Van Orsdel Nursing Scholarship Endowment
Doris Smith served nearly 35 years as a registered nurse with Montana Deaconess Medical Center until just before her death in 1983. She was known for her delightful sense of humor and warm personality. Aware of Doris’ devotion and interest in the future of nursing, her friends and family created a nursing scholarship in her name the year she passed away.
It was through the special interest of Rev. William Wesley Van Orsdel that the Deaconess Hospital, now Benefis Hospitals, first began providing care in Great Falls in 1898. This endowment to provide nursing scholarships was created in the late 1980s in memory of this hospital co-founder and the significant contributions he made to medical care for the people of Montana.
Both the Doris Smith Scholarship and the Van Orsdel Scholarship originally were set up as scholarship funds and later turned into a combined endowment. This scholarship is for Montana State University students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree or BSN's pursing graduate degrees.
