Inpatient Behavioral Health Services
Inpatient Behavioral Health is a 20-bed unit at Benefis Hospitals West Campus, providing services to adults experiencing emotional, mental or substance abuse problems.
The inpatient unit is made up of two distinct parts- a locked acute care area of six beds and an intermediate unlocked care area of 14 beds.
An inpatient stay on the Behavioral Health Unit usually begins with a visit to the Emergency Room where the physical health of the patient is assessed. If physically and medically stable, the patient is transported to the acute care unit on the West Campus by ambulance.
Most patients are admitted to the Acute Care area for safety and evaluation. The initial evaluation is conducted by our healthcare professionals to learn about the person's health history, current problems and treatment needs.
Following initial evaluation and stabilization, patients - on order from their physician - may move to the Intermediate Care area to continue work on their treatment plan and to develop plans for discharge.
Hospitalization on the inpatient unit is usually short-term ranging in length from three to six days.
What is my room like on the inpatient unit?
All rooms on Acute Care are private rooms with limited furnishings to provide for the safety of our patients who may be unable to provide for their own safety. Personal belongings are kept in lockers at the nurse's station. On Intermediate Care, the rooms are either private or semi-private. Most Intermediate rooms are equipped with standard or low-rise hospital beds.
Rooms on Behavioral Health are not equipped with a nurse call system as patients are encouraged to develop personal coping skills and responsibility by coming to the nursing stations with requests and needs. Television sets and telephones are provided in our patient lounges to encourage participation in unit therapy activities and socialization with patients and staff.
Patients are encouraged to eat in our dining rooms and wear their own clothes. If a patient is on the Acute Care Unit, they wear hospital scrubs and are expected to keep their rooms in order.
When will I see a psychiatrist?
Our psychiatrists see patients and make rounds each morning after team staffing from 8 to 9 a.m.
Outpatient Behavioral Health Services
Partial Hospitalization is a structured day program designed for mentally ill or addicted clients that require acute care but who may not need full hospitalization. In Partial Hospitalization, clients meet for group therapy five hours a day, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The program typically lasts five to ten days depending on the individual needs of each client.
- helps prevent inpatient hospitalization
- provides a transition from inpatient hospitalization to outpatient services to reduce the frequency and duration of inpatient stays
- provides more intensive therapy when previous outpatient therapy has not been successful in stabilizing a patient's condition
- offers a supportive environment that emphasizes self-responsibility, independence and stability
The first appointment at Benefis Behavioral Health Outpatient Services is an evaluation interview with one of our licensed professionals. The evaluation interview will allow us to gather basic information about you, learn your reasons for coming to the Behavioral Health Unit and to assess your needs. The interview may also involve individualized testing and obtaining information from family, employer, referring healthcare providers or others.
This appointment may result in recommendations for treatment or referral to another therapist or agency in the community that can best meet your needs.
No physician referral is necessary. However, an appointment is required so please call us to schedule a time that works well for you. We can be reached at 406.455.2367.
Outpatient counseling programs are tailored to meet the needs of each client.
Individual or group therapy sessions are scheduled as the result of customized care based on individual evaluation. Customized care includes client involvement in the identification of problem areas, development of objectives for behavior change and implementation of tailored interventions.
Specific groups or counseling sessions help clients:
- Gain an understanding of their mental disorder or addiction.
- Implement changes in behavior and attitude that support recovery.
- Experience improvement in their life situation.
- Learn skills to manage life despite symptoms or without the use of alcohol or other non-prescription mood altering substances.
