Benefis Sletten Cancer Institute (SCI) in Great Falls offers the most comprehensive, cutting-edge cancer care available in Montana.

Having opened its doors in December 2005, Benefis SCI is uniquely designed to care for the mind, body and spirit of cancer patients and their family and friends. The entire experience – a 54,000 sq. ft. facility – was designed incorporating input from cancer patients and survivors, as well as doctors, nurses, hospital staff and lay members of our community.

Our goal at Benefis SCI is to help patients and their loved ones understand what cancer is, how cancer is diagnosed and what treatment options are available; how to work with their healthcare providers when questions arise; to provide assistance that spans the continuum of care, including prevention, screening, education and information, patient care, research and hospice care.

In Havre:

Hi-Line Sletten Cancer Center’s (SCC) comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach is designed to provide each patient with a complete, streamlined and personalized treatment plan. Patients receive leading-edge medical care through state-of-the-art technology and breakthrough medications and therapies, all in a comfortable, supportive environment.

Opened in August 2008, Hi-Line SCC is a joint venture of Havre’s Northern Montana Hospital and Benefis Health System.

Hi-Line SCC and its parent facility, Benefis Sletten Cancer Institute in Great Falls, share a commitment to provide Northcentral Montana with the highest quality of cancer care, without excessive travel.

The doctors and staff at Hi-Line SCC understand that fighting cancer is about more than receiving medical treatment. Their holistic approach helps patients cope with the physical and mental impacts of the disease, from diagnosis through recovery. So in addition to the latest medical technology, Hi-Line SCC offers:

  • A Resource Center with a library of cancer-related books, videos and DVDs.
  • An Appearance Center to help patients with the visible effects of cancer treatment.
  • A variety of support groups for cancer patients and their families.
  • Financial counseling to help with insurance and payment issues.

Gift of Life Housing

Benefis Gift of Life Housing Centers provide free housing to individuals who live outside of Great Falls and are receiving treatment at Benefis Health System for cancer or another illness, or who have a child in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Also, a family member can stay at Gift of Life Housing when a loved one is receiving inpatient care at Benefis.

Gift of Life Housing becomes a “home away from home” by providing a warm, cozy atmosphere for people during what could be the greatest crisis of their lives. The apartments each feature a fully-equipped kitchen, living room, bedroom and bathroom, with linens and towels provided. There’s a laundry room available for guests as well.

The two Gift of Life Housing Centers – one by Benefis Hospitals East Campus and Benefis Sletten Cancer Institute, and the other by Benefis Hospitals West Campus – together offer a total of 22 apartments and six short-stay rooms (similar to hotel rooms). Additionally, East Gift of Life Housing has RV spaces with hookups to water and electricity; West Gift of Life Housing has RV spaces with hookups to water, electricity and sewer.

Cancer Services Coordination

The Cancer Services Coordinator will help you and your family access our comprehensive support services, such as genetic counseling, financial assistance and support groups through the Circle of Hope Cancer Survivorship Program. Consider the Cancer Services Coordinator your resource for cancer programs and services here at Benefis SCI, whether it’s guiding you to educational materials in our Cancer Resource Center, helping you explore transportation and lodging options, or arranging for massage and skin care through the Benefis Med Spa. What to bring to your first appointment

When you visit our facilities, please be sure to bring the following with you:

  • Identification (such as your drivers license)
  • Insurance Card and Information
  • Questions – be sure to ask us anything!
  • A friend or family member (to help you remember the details and to provide support)

Financial Counseling

Our on-site financial counselor is available for patients and their families to provice assistance with insurance and payment issues to help reduce the stress related to financial obligations.


Patient Navigator

Going through the diagnosis and treatment of cancer can often be a confusing and frightening experience. Our professional patient navigator provide support to cancer patients and their families by personally helping them through the complex health system.

Rehabilitative Therapies

Physical Therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy services are provided within the Cancer Institute. The physical therapists at Sletten are specially trained and certified in lymphadema treatments, and can provide a wide range of services depending on your particular needs. Therapy services can help to maximize strength and motion, and minimize discomfort from cancer and side effects of treatment.

Spiritual Care

Although cancer is characterized by physical changes, the patient's spiritual status, emotional well-being, and relationships have an effect on their tolerance of treatment and outcome of disease. Oncology patients and their families have unique and changing needs as they grieve the loss of health. Spiritual Care chaplains interact with cancer patients and their families to enhance their healing process and give them spiritual and emotional support.

Spiritual Care services are available 24 hours a day. Chapels are located on both campuses. Chapel services are held daily and televised to patient rooms via closed circuit television.

Home Health Care

Spectrum Home Health Care brings health care services directly to the home setting and is tailored to the needs of each individual. Services are ordered by physicians and provided and monitored by trained health professionals, including: registered and licensed practical nurses, personal care attendants, medical social workers, physical, occupational and speech therapists, registered dietitians, and interdenominational chaplains.

Home Health Care is available in Cascade, Choteau, Judith Basin, Lewis and Clark, Pondera, and Teton Counties. Spectrum Home Health Care is a state-licensed, Medicare-certified agency accredited by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).

Home Care services may be arranged by contacting your personal physician or by calling Spectrum Home Care at 406.453.0360. Office hours are Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Nutrition

Registered dietitians are available through Benefis Health System for patients with cancer. Maximizing nutrition during treatment and recovery from cancer is key. Nutrition strategies are individualized based on the patient, type of cancer, treatments received, and other factors.

The Oncology Nutrition Dietetic Practice Group (ONDPG) is a group of the American Dietetic Association. Members consist of dietitians across the country who work with oncology patients. The vision of this group includes enhancing the skills and knowledge of oncology practitioners in the care of cancer patients and cancer prevention.

The ONDPG offers informative publications, including the Oncology Nutrition Patient Education Materials.
