da Vinci® Surgical System / Procedures
For Gynecologic and Urologic Conditions
The da Vinci® robotic system provides surgeons with an alternative to both traditional open surgery and conventional laparoscopy, putting a surgeon's hands at the controls of a state-of-the-art robotic platform. The da Vinci System enables surgeons to perform even the most complex and delicate procedures through very small incisions with unmatched precision. For procedures such as prostatectomy, that can mean less risk of side effects such as incontinence and impotence. da Vinci offers most hysterectomy patients less blood loss and a faster return to work and other activities.
Benefits of da Vinci surgery may include:
- Significantly shorter recovery time
- Less blood loss
- Less scarring
- Faster return to work and other daily activities
- Better clinical outcomes in many cases
Although it's called a "robot" the da Vinci Surgical System is really an extension of the surgeon, a sophisticated tool that makes the most of the surgeon's skill and expertise. The surgeon operates the machine from a console, which provides him or her with a 3D image of the surgical site.
The robot seamlessly translates the doctor's hand, wrist and finger movements into precise, real-time movements of surgical instruments inside the patient. The robot has four interactive arms, which enhance the surgeon's dexterity and allow him or her to get closer to the surgical site. The surgeon can immediately leave the robot and work directly on the patient if necessary.
It's a dramatic improvement over conventional laparoscopy, in which the doctor is guided by a video monitor while working above the patient with hand-held, long-shafted instruments. For patients, da Vinci can mean a shorter hospital stay and a faster return to normal activities.

For Gallbladder Surgery: Single-Site da Vinci® Surgery
If you have been told you need gallbladder surgery, ask your doctor about Single-Site da Vinci Surgery. This procedure is performed through a single incision using state-of-the-art precision instruments. Patients who choose Single-Site da Vinci Surgery experience a virtually scarless procedure since surgery is performed through only one incision in the navel (belly button), which dramatically limits visible scarring.
The primary potential benefits of Single-Site da Vinci Surgery include:
- Minimal scarring
- Minimal pain
- Low blood loss
- Fast recovery
- Short hospital stay
- High patient satisfaction
As with any surgery, these benefits cannot be guaranteed since surgery is unique to each patient and procedure.
The da Vinci Surgical System is designed to overcome the limitations of manual laparoscopy with enhanced capabilities, including high definition 3D vision and a magnified view. Your doctor controls the da Vinci System, which translates his or her hand movements into smaller, more precise movements of tiny instruments inside your body.
Though it is often called a “robot,” da Vinci cannot act on its own. The surgery is performed entirely by your doctor. Together, the da Vinci System and Single-Site™ instruments allow your doctor to perform gallbladder surgery through a single incision. As a result, you may be able to get back to your life without the recovery or scars that usually follow major surgery.
