A stroke is sometimes called a "brain attack" and happens when blood flow to a part of the brain is interrupted. If blood flow is stopped for longer than a few seconds, the brain cannot get blood and oxygen. Brain cells can die, causing permanent damage.

Signs and symptoms of Stroke:

  • Weakness, numbness or paralysis particularly on one side
  • Blurred or decreased vision
  • Problems speaking or understanding
  • Dizziness or loss of balance
  • Sudden, severe or unexplained headache

If you experience any of these stroke symptoms, CALL 9-1-1 immediately.

Benefis Primary Stroke Center has been recognized for its excellence in performance by national accrediting agencies. From initial assessment in the Regional Emergency Center through hospitalization and rehabilitation services, the Stroke Program brings together a knowledgeable team of care providers to enhance a positive outcome. There also are opportunities to participate in clinical trials, which may help prevent stroke, enhance recovery and advance scientific knowledge.
