Glossary

Adaptive Equipment: Devices to make the activities of daily living such as walking, eating, bathing, etc. easier and safer. Examples are walkers, grab bars for shower/bath, canes and so forth.

Adult Day Care: A structured program, usually weekdays, featuring activities, lunch, health and rehabilitative services for older adults in need of supervision. Meals and snacks, programming, outings, support and counseling may be provided. Transportation is sometimes included in the fee.

Aging Services: Created in 1973 by the Older Americans Act to address the needs of Americans over 60.

Assisted Living: A professionally managed residential facility that provides room and board, and some assistance with bathing, dressing, toileting, and eating; medication management, supervision and activities.

Emergency Response System: Includes equipment hooked to the telephone line and a wireless signal button worn by the older adult. Trained responders are available 24-hours-a-day, 7 days-a-week to provide assistance in the event of a medical emergency in the home.

Home Care Services: In-home services may include personal care, household services, meal preparation/delivery, respite care and shopping. A physicians order is not required to request these services.

Home Health Services: Medical care in the home, ordered by a physician. Services can include nursing, occupational, speech or physical therapy, social work or a home health aide.

Home Modification: Structural or other changes to a home which allows for older adults to remain safely in their homes. Examples include wheelchair ramps to front and back doors, installation of grab bars in the bathroom, etc.

Hospice: Specialized care for the terminally ill, focusing on comfort and pain control, not cure. Services include medical, home care, social services, and bereavement counseling to the terminally ill and their families. A Hospice Residential Facility is also available.

Infusion Therapy Services: IV therapy services provided in the home for nutritional support, treatment of infectious diseases, oncology, pain management, cardiovascular illness and other therapies. Services are overseen and monitored by a registered pharmacist working with your physician.

Reassurance Calls: A volunteer service that provides daily telephone calls to older adults living alone.

Respite Care: Provides temporary relief to family or friends from the tasks of caring for an older adult. May last for a few hours or days.

Retirement Homes: Individual apartments in multi-unit rental housing for older adults. Shared common areas such as dining rooms and libraries. Meals, housekeeping, transportation and recreation are usually included in the rent payment.

Senior Centers: Places where older adults go to participate in health, nutrition and recreational programs.

Walk-In Medical Care: Medical services rendered without an appointment for non-emergency care.
