About SCI

Medical Director's Welcome

Grant W. Harrer, MDSletten Cancer Institute at Benefis Healthcare is the most comprehensive, state-of-the-art cancer institute in the region.  Our goals are many:  to help patients and their families understand what cancer is, how cancer is diagnosed, which treatment options are available, and how to work with their healthcare providers when questions arise.  We also want to provide assistance that spans the continuum of care, including prevention, screening, education and information, patient care, research, and hospice care.

Sletten Cancer Institute (SCI) is the realization of a two-year long dream.  Our $21 million dollar facility was built largely through the amazing generosity of area donors who supported the dream of building a comprehensive, state-of-the-art cancer institute dedicated to caring for a person’s mind, body and spirit.  Now that SCI is a reality, we hope to significantly reduce the need for patients to travel outside of the area for their cancer care.

The cancer program at Benefis Healthcare (including its precursor institutions) has been continuously approved by the American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer since 1981, a testament to our long-standing commitment to cancer care.

No other healthcare provider in the region matches the range of medical and support services offered at Sletten Cancer Institute.   On behalf of all of us, welcome to the future of cancer care.

Director's Welcome

Kathie AvisWelcome to Benefis Healthcare’s Sletten Cancer Institute (SCI), Montana's most comprehensive and state-of-the-art cancer facility. SCI has been uniquely designed to care for the mind, body and spirit of cancer patients and their caregivers. In fact, SCI was built based on the visions of cancer patients and their families, area healthcare professionals, and members of the community. Our team of expert medical oncologists and radiation oncologists, nurses and other cancer care professionals are dedicated to providing advanced cancer treatment, research and education to their fellow Montanans. Equally as important, Sletten Cancer Institute provides a truly progressive approach to preventing and diagnosing cancer.

Since opening in December 2005, we’ve grown substantially.  From acquisition of our amazing CyberKnife® technology and a newly forged affiliation with the National Cancer Institute designated Huntsman Cancer Institute, to our partnership with Northern Montana Hospital in Havre to build a satellite SCI facility to better serve Hi-Line patients and their families, the past year has been a success for cancer patients and their families throughout the region.

In addition, we’ve expanded the array of treatment services available at SCI to include pediatric oncology and gynecologic oncology, reducing the need for patients to travel long distances for care.  One of our key goals is to continually find new, better ways to provide cancer treatment closer to home.

I invite you to stop in and visit us at our beautiful new facility the next time you’re in Great Falls.  Until then, I hope you’ll visit us on-line often to keep up-to-date.

Kathie Avis,
Chief Administrative Officer
