Consumer Tips from the American Dietetic Association

Develop a healthy skepticism about products that use the following words in labels or advertisements:

Ancient Oxygenation Deficiency Enhance Organic Secret Cure Exclusive Body's own defense system Exotic or foreign Nontoxic

All natural enzyme pure miraculous freedom of choice vitamin therapy detoxification cleansing life force balancing body chemistry breakthrough

• Beware of claims that are too good to be true. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
• Remember that the broader the claim, the less believable it is, as in products which claim to cure several ailments.
• Beware of products that you can get only through the mail or through "special" distributors.
• Beware of products that put down the health profession or stress opposition or disapproval by the health profession.
• Ask for references. Be skeptical of testimonials and "research" by experts who are not fully identified.
  

If you decide to seek alternative treatment:

• Inform your physician
• Keep a daily log while taking the product(s). Include:
  
  
• What - the name(s) of the product(s)
• When - the dates and times of the day the product(s) was (were) taken
• Who - the name of the person and store who recommended the product(s)
• Dose - the amount(s) and concentration(s) listed on the label
• Reactions if any - itching, rashes, wheezing, numbness, or tingling in limbs

• Keep a sample of each product (in the original container, if possible).
• Report any reactions or side effects to your physician immediately. Report adverse reactions to the Food and Drug Administration's MedWatch at 1-800-332-1088.
