Atherosclerosis, commonly called hardening of the arteries, occurs when plaque covers the inner walls of an artery. The thick, fatty substance causes the artery to lose its elasticity. Risk factors include smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. Some people also have a genetic predisposition associated with high cholesterol that places them at increased risk for the disease.
