2018 Men & Machines Skin Cancer Screening Program Outcomes

The 7th Annual Men and Machines Car Show and Men’s health event was held at the Benefis Sletten Cancer Institute on Saturday, September 8th. In addition to the spectacular array of motorcycles, hot rods and classic cars on display, a variety of men’s health focused booths attracted spectators who were interested in learning more about disease diagnosis, prevention and screening.

Benefis Med Spa was onsite to provide skin cancer screening and sun safety information in addition to sun screen for those enjoying the beautiful Montana fall sunshine. According to the Montana Central Tumor Registry, since 2010 the incidence of melanoma (the most deadly form of skin cancer) has been significantly higher than U.S. averages. At this year’s event 22 people were screened for skin cancer (17 men and 5 women). Of those, 8 were referred for additional biopsies or evaluation. 2 individuals were ultimately diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma and 1 with basal cell carcinoma, both common forms of skin cancer. No cases of melanoma were diagnosed during this screening event. All participants received valuable information regarding sun safety behaviors and sunscreen.
