Daisy Winner Kyle Vandenacre Recognized for Quick Thinking and Vital Care After Man was Shot

A former Benefis patient reached out to Manager of the Emergency Department Scott Schandelson to recognize Kyle Vandenacre, RN, for his care and quick thinking before the patient even made it to the Emergency Department.

Kyle is our second Daisy Award winner of 2024.

The patient was shot while working at a local fast-food restaurant, and Kyle happened to be in the drive-through line. Kyle realized what was happening and quickly gained access to the patient by jumping through the drive-through window. Kyle donned a pair of food service gloves and rendered aid to the patient until paramedics and the ambulance arrived.

Scott wrote the following in Kyle’s Daisy Award nomination letter:

The patient called to make sure Benefis and I knew how much Kyle helped him and what an amazing person he was to do that for him. He wanted Kyle and the teams that cared for him to know that he has been released back to full duty. The patient sounds great and is truly thankful for everything that Kyle did in the moment and the care that all of our teams provided to him.

Kyle works in the Emergency Department and has been with Benefis for nearly two years.

“I witnessed the shooting and the moments leading up to it,” he said. “I banged on the window and told them to let me in so I could help.”

After the patient was loaded into the ambulance and Kyle spoke to the police, he realized he was still hungry.

“I asked the staff, ‘Can I still get my food?’ They gave me everything they had prepared, and I brought the extras to the Emergency Department.”
