Daisy Winner Carlene Turner 'Felt Like a Loving Family Member' to NICU Family

Carlene Turner, RN, is a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) nurse and has been with Benefis Health System for 34 years.

She is our third Daisy Award winner of 2025

Carlene was nominated by a NICU family through our online employee recognition program. They shared the following in Carlene's Daisy Award nomination letter:

We have been in the NICU going on a month now. The most traumatic experience my wife and I have endured. A grief like no other of what we envisioned labor/delivery and bonding with our baby would be. Carlene has gone above and beyond with her care and acknowledgment of our daily stress. We are a military family and do not have family to help with our toddler or stresses. Carlene has felt like a loving family member every single day that she has been assigned to our son. She has helped my wife on days she felt like she physically couldn’t handle the mental load of the NICU. A fantastic nurse, always checking to see if we need anything at all. She takes such good care of our son and reassures us when we have to switch off being at home with our toddler. She truly has been a Godsend angel, and I don’t know how we would have gotten through this without her. We are beyond grateful for the entire NICU staff.

Director of Women's and Children's Services Toni Hacket and Manager of Pediatric Unit and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Harly Lee praised Carlene in their own recognition letter:

From the moment Carlene steps onto the unit, her calm and steady presence reassures families and staff alike. Parents facing the fear and uncertainty of the NICU often describe how she encourages them to touch, hold, and participate in their baby’s care without hesitation. She has a unique way of empowering families to feel confident in their role as parents, even in the most fragile circumstances. This compassionate connection transforms their NICU journey and leaves a lasting impact long after discharge.

Her contributions extend beyond patient care. Carlene is deeply committed to the growth and success of her colleagues. She takes an active role in training new nurses, patiently guiding them through the complexities of NICU nursing, and serving as a trusted mentor as they build their skills. Her knowledge, professionalism, and approachable demeanor create an environment where nurses feel supported, valued, and inspired to provide the highest level of care.
