Benefis Hospitalist Retiring After Years of Compassionate Care

Benefis Health System wishes a warm farewell and congratulations to James Harkness, DO, as he enters retirement. Dr. Harkness is a family medicine physician and hospitalist who not only spent his career caring for patients but also educating the next generation of clinical providers.
His colleagues shared heartfelt messages about the impact Dr. Harkness made during his years at Benefis:
“Throughout his career, he cared for countless patients and families during some of life’s most important moments. While his clinical expertise was widely respected, it was his kindness, humility, and genuine compassion that left the greatest impression on me.
“Through decades of change in healthcare, he remained a constant presence at Benefis. Always dependable, compassionate, and unwavering in his commitment to patients. His impact extended far beyond the exam room. Colleagues across every department knew him not only as an exceptional physician, but as a trusted friend, mentor, and teammate. He had a rare gift for making people feel valued, and nearly every interaction left those around him smiling.
“In a healthcare environment that often moves at a relentless pace, he never lost sight of the human side of medicine. He reminded us that caring for patients begins with caring about people, and that true excellence is measured not only by knowledge and skill, but by empathy, integrity, and compassion.”
-Alexander Bules, DO

“Dr. Harkness has had a profound influence on both my career and my life. He graciously allowed me to shadow him while he was still in private practice, at a time when I was transitioning from a career in engineering to pursuing medicine. Later, when I returned to Benefis as a fourth-year medical student to complete my clinical rotations, I had the opportunity to work closely with him in the Emergency Department while he was admitting patients for the hospitalist service.
“Over the past eight years, Dr. Harkness has been both a mentor and a friend. Through his compassion, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to his patients, he has shown me the kind of physician — and person — I strive to be. His example has been a constant reminder of the lasting impact we can have on the lives of our patients and one another.”
-Brandon French, DO

Dr. Harkness was driven to help patients regain their health. He often gave them the advice, “It’s your life, live it!”
He is known to follow that advice during his free time, and we hope he enjoys even more adventures with his family and friends during retirement.
