Sletten Cancer Institute’s Genetics Investment, Improvements Put Patients at Ease

The walk through the healing garden at Sletten Cancer Institute and the sound of the garden’s waterfall set a relaxing tone for genetic counseling appointments even before patients take in the new waiting area.
“Patients say it feels less clinical than other offices,” said Betsy Smith, genetic counselor. “They can sit comfortably to chat. It puts them at ease, which is helpful when we have to have some hard conversations about risk and the possibility of passing on disease.”
The David and Tanya Cameron Genetic Counseling Suite was added during a renovation of Sletten Cancer Institute that wrapped up with a joyful celebration in early 2025.

The SCI revisioning project also established a teaching kitchen, a new salon, a bigger lab, new offices and exam rooms, and other reconfigurations. The expanded infusion suite is light and bright with more privacy and more capacity, served by a large, new pharmacy.
Donors contributed more than $4.7 million to make the project possible.
The genetic counseling suite includes a dedicated space that’s “more welcoming and comfortable,” Betsy said.
There is now handy storage for testing kits, space for patients and their families, and, at times, graduate students furthering their
education with Betsy.
“Students who have seen practices in various settings tell me this stands out as a premier consultation space for patients,” Betsy said. “This is an area that will continue to grow in importance, and this space is well-suited for that.”
