Introduction
Dr. Gregory Tierney is an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in orthopedic sports medicine and adult reconstructive and cartilage transplantation.
He also serves as President of Benefis Medical Group and as Chief Medical Officer of Benefis Health System – roles that allow him to work on the administration and delivery side of medicine, in addition to direct patient care.
Dr. Tierney enjoys working closely with patients. “I always consider the patient first and try to formulate a plan for the patient that is in agreement with their needs and desires moving forward,” he explains. “Due to the internet, patients are far more knowledgeable than they were in the past and so they can be better informed contributors to their care plan.”
He was inspired to become an orthopedic surgeon by a family friend who was in the profession, and even followed his exact same training pathway.
He particularly enjoys his field because he actually gets to “fix” people and help them reach a better quality of life. “Much in medicine requires managing problems – but orthopedists get the opportunity to resolve problems, which is a great satisfier to the patient and to the provider,” he says.
Dr. Tierney encourages patients to take an active role in their care. “Listen to your body; you know it better than anyone else,” he says. “When something doesn’t seem right, it usually isn’t. So seek care earlier. It is much easier to deal with medical problems earlier rather than later.”
