Introduction
Shawn Derby is a nurse practitioner who provides care in the Emergency Department. He has extensive nursing experience in critical care, flight medicine, and emergency medicine.
Shawn started his medical career as an emergency medical technician and firefighter before taking a break to teach high school. He began his nursing career after working as a volunteer firefighter.
Shawn approaches his patient interactions as a “professional listener.”
“I start asking questions, and I am not afraid of a little silence. I use it as a tool,” he says. “I want to find out what my patients need to get the best care in the Emergency Department, and I want to know what they need going forward.”
In his free time, Shawn values spending time with family. He has three children busy with sports, and the family also enjoys the many outdoor activities available in the region.
