Introduction
Matthew Kunkel, DO, is an anesthesiologist who specializes in adult cardiac anesthesia. Dr. Kunkel was inspired to pursue medicine when he was in college and worked as an orderly in a Salt Lake City hospital.
“I enjoyed the patient-care aspect of the environment and decided to make that my career,” he says.
Patient care remains important for Dr. Kunkel in his practice today, especially patient safety. “My first priority is to keep the patient safe, and coming in at a close second is patient comfort,” he says.
Dr. Kunkel values working with the great staff at Benefis Health as they care for patients before and after surgery. He also enjoys interacting with the many different patients he sees throughout the day. He advises them to ask questions and be involved with their care. “If you don’t understand something, tell me and I’ll explain it better,” he says.
When Dr. Kunkel isn’t helping patients, he enjoys camping, hunting, and spending time with his wife and kids.
