Diagnosing Breast Conditions
Our mammography and diagnostic imaging services use the latest technologies available. We have been accredited for the last three years by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC).
3D Digital Mammography
Screening mammograms are the single best way to detect breast cancer, and can find it early when it’s easier to treat. If a suspicious area is found, or if your doctor has found signs of a breast problem, a diagnostic mammogram will focus on that area. Benefis mammography services uses 3D digital mammography, which has advantages over the older film mammograms. We also use a system called computer-aided detection (CAD), which adds an extra layer of scrutiny to the mammography images.
Breast Ultrasound
This test uses sound waves to make detailed images of the breast on a computer screen. A technologist moves a wand-like instrument over the skin of the breast to perform the test, which should not be uncomfortable. Breast ultrasound is done to examine breast changes such as lumps or cysts. It is also used as a guide during a needle biopsy.
Breast Biopsy
This process uses a needle or other instrument to remove a small tissue sample from the breast. This tissue is examined in the lab to check for signs of cancer. A stereotactic breast biopsy is done in combination with mammography to target the exact location for the tissue sample.
Breast MRI
Some women who have a high risk for developing breast cancer may have an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) test. This imaging test may also be used with patients who are newly diagnosed with breast cancer to find the extent of their disease, to evaluate a patient’s response to chemotherapy, and in other specific situations. It is used along with mammography and breast ultrasound.
Treating Breast Cancer
Our team of cancer experts uses the latest treatments and the most compassionate care for each patient.
Surgery
Our expert surgeons collaborate with cancer specialists to determine the best treatment strategy for each patient. That includes determining the stage of the cancer, whether surgery is the best treatment option, and what surgical technique will be most effective. One option is hidden scar surgery. Our surgeons also work with your cancer care team to relieve or minimize pain.
Radiation Therapy
This therapy destroys cancer cells. It can be delivered in a beam from outside the body or through pellets or seeds that give off radiation from inside the body. Radiation therapy is highly focused on the target area, which can be in the breast or nearby lymph nodes. It’s often used after surgery to reduce the risk for recurrence.
Medical Oncology
Our medical oncologists individualize therapy for each patient to provide the best treatment outcomes. Your breast cancer specialist may recommend one or more medical oncology treatments such as:
- Chemotherapy, which can destroy breast cancer cells and shrink tumors.
- Hormone therapy, which can slow or stop the growth of breast cancers that are hormone sensitive. It can also help keep cancer from recurring or developing in the other breast.
- Immunotherapy, which can help your own immune system find and destroy breast cancer cells.
Our patients appreciate the convenience and comfort of getting their medical oncology treatments in an outpatient setting.
